Blue Fescue

Common name:Blue Fescue
Botanical name:Festuca ovina glauca

This group of ornamental grasses generally grow less than a foot tall and have fine, green to blue-green, evergreen leaves that are very thin and hair-like. Flowers appear in the summer and have an airy and open appearance. Prefers full sun but will tolerate afternoon shade if not over-watered. It needs well draining soil and is drought tolerant once it's established. An evergreen, it may need tidying up in the spring; trim out dead foliage and seed heads.

Coral Bells

Common name:Coral Bells
Botanical name:Heuchera sanguinea

Coral Bells have beautiful round, scalloped leaves that makes this plant a garden favorite even when it isn't in bloom. Red to carmine bell-shaped flowers appear on a long, graceful, wiry stem in late spring. Removing the spent flowers will prolong the bloom season. Excellent for dry shade areas, they will require more water with more light. Many species and selections are available with different leave and flower colors; also with differing water tolerances. For best effect, plant many together, as they are delicate in appearance and can get lost among bolder plants.

Pissard Purple-leaf Plum

Common name:Pissard Purple-leaf Plum
Botanical name:Prunus cerasifera 'Atropurpurea'

This is a small, deciduous, shrubby tree, growing about 15 to 20 feet tall and wide. It tends to be low-branched and it is best used where this feature is an asset, not a detriment. Spring flowers are white to pinkish-white, and appear before leaves emerge. Leavesa are reddish-purple on emerging, becoming more of a bronzy-red to brown-red as they mature. Small reddish-purple fruit ripen during summer months.

Willow Bellflower

Common name:Willow Bellflower
Botanical name:Campanula persicifolia

Also called peach-leaved bellflower, this campanula grows as about 18 to 30 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. The foliage forms a mound of green, peach-leaf or willow-like leaves that reach about half the height of the plant. Tall stems with bell-shaped flowers in shades of white to blue bloom late spring to early summer. There are a number of named cultivars, and they are all well suited to the perennial border.

Water Saving Tip:

Change spray sprinklers to low-flow bubbler or drip systems. Shrubs and trees are ideal candidates for this type of irrigation because the water is applied directly to the root zones.
